Carla Carmichael's Story
Discovering Homeopathy was my pathway to health. I, too, had tried almost everything in the alternative and complementary health field. My love and passion for this true therapeutic science has sent me across the world to enhance my knowledge and experience. Please read further to find out more.
On top of the world? Full of Zest? .....when was the last time I felt like that? Perhaps it was in the dim and distant past, a lifetime ago! Now I may be reduced to taking a daily BPC(Big Pharmaceutical Cocktail),it could be a single concoction,or a more colourful combination, whatever, there is always a BPC available, the 'One jacket fits all' being the most popular on the menu! That was how it was for me. Sounds familiar.....read on.
A number of years ago, I became very ill, I couldn't walk nor read my own language, and that was just two of the symptoms that I had. I don't like BPC's of any variety, so I was spared the Molotov by the GP at the time. I then went off in to the sunset in pursuit of a 'cure'.

During that time, my pocket became a few hundred pounds lighter and the vitamin supplement industry, for a few years, succeeded in making record profits with my help! It was all, in the vain hope, that something would do the trick. Finally, I came across Homeopathic medicine. It was only through my own ignorance, that I hadn't known about it before, but then hindsight is a wonderful thing.
SRI LANKA AND INDIA
Initially, I went to Sri Lanka to do an intensive clinical acupuncture course at the International Open University of Complementary Medicine (IOUCM - Medicina Alternativa) Colombo. It was whilst living in Colombo that I learned of Dr Shanthakumar, a Homeopathic Medical Consultant and a senior member of the Sri Lankan Homoeopathic Medical Council. Dr Shanthakumar studied and trained in India some 25 years ago. Once I had finished the acupuncture course, I decided, that although useful, sticking pins in to people definately wasn't for me! I then divided my time between patients at IOUCM, whom I was already treating with homeopathy and the Doctor's clinics.
Dr Shanthakumar has a number of clinics to attend to, his main one, being in Colombo and the others, either in the hill country or along the coast. At his Hatton clinic, in the hill country, it wasn't unusual to find at least 20 patients waiting outside at 7.30am on a Sunday morning. By the time the day was over, 50 patients would have been seen by him. Luckily, I got to see pathology that I would never see in the UK, such as large breast tumors and very deep festering, open wounds, all of which were treated by the Doctor successfully with homeopathic medicines.
I, too, gained experience from treating patients with severe head injuries, strokes, chikungunya (a virus carried by mosquitoes), where conventional medicine had been exhausted or patients were told that nothing could be done!
There is nothing more rewarding in this world than to see a person, whom following a serious RTA three years before I arrived in Colombo, which had left him unable to walk and talk, gain immense benefit from being prescribed homeopathic remedies - Arnica and latterly Natrum Sulphuricum. In his case, the combination of homeopathy and physiotherapy treatment has brought about lasting benefits and improved his quality of life immensely. As a mark of respect both the patients and the Doctors (conventional and homeopathic) in India and Sri Lanka refer to me as Dr Carla.
The knowledge and experience that Dr Shanthakumar, and those of his ilk possess, is truly awe inspiring. It has been both an honour and a privilege to have worked voluntarily and studied in these countries and, as a result, I have gained new friends in Homeopathy.
India is now the home of Homeopathic Medicine, where it is considered on par with Allopathic (conventional) Medicine. It has a systematic Homeopathic medical education that is the envy of the world. I certainly will continue my links with these countries, so that I may continue to further my knowledge and thus bring it back to Scotland. Homeopathic Medicine is a lifetimes study and even ones lifetime isn't long enough!
